What a PLEASURE it was meeting The Elliott Family, and little Maclynn is just the light of everyone's lives, there's no doubt in that. Seeing a family so in love with one another, is so nice to see, and it's ALWAYS nice catching Mom & Dad in little lovestruck moments as we all know those don't come along nearly as often after a child is born as the focus becomes diverted to the kiddo. This morning I got to meet little princess Leah, for her 4 month pictures. What an adorable happy little baby, I had so much fun playing with all the girly little stuff that I never get to put on Coltyn, and was so happy Mom brought her to me to photograph her. She has such a cute little personality, and is so strong for only being 4 months old!! As we were chatting Mom told me she got really lucky, little Miss is already sleeping through the nights! How blessed are they!? Beautiful, happy, well behaved baby at only 4 months? Lucky ducks! Thanks guys for sharing her with me for some photographs, I had a blast and hope to see her back soon for more fun!

Wow, I could NOT have spent my day in any better company than of that of this little guy. He seriously makes me want to have another little one, just to go through this stage, he's so happy, the same way Coltyn was at that age, and still is for the most part. Baby R was just so happy go lucky, I never heard him fuss once throughout the entire time I was around him! This session was easy breezy and I have so many in this sneak peak because it was hard enough just picking one! Baby K: Newborn Portraits Lafayette, Indiana

What a blessing it was to meet baby K when she was less than 24 hours old. The original plan had been for me to photograph her birth, however, she had a plan of her own, and as you all know how that goes, we went with Baby K's plan instead (without much choice =)) I had forgotten how wrinkly, beautiful and scrunched up newborns are...talk about instant baby fever?! Baby K is so beautiful, tiny, and perfect in every way. I feel blessed that her parents had me there with her when she was still so new to this world to photograph many of her first moments, it quite possibly made my entire week to be able to spend such important personal moments with their family that has now grown by 2 more feet. I never knew the true meaning to an old quote I'd once heard, "children reinvent your world for you..." seeing such a new life in this world is breathtaking, and I look back of course on the memories of my son's birth, how did the time pass so quickly? Instead of asking how could time pass this fast, I thank God that for every newborn baby he brings into this world, it's a true testament to his word, that life should go on with every newborn's birth. So, in closing, here is to Baby K, her parents, and her older siblings, congratulations to you all on such a beautiful baby girl =)

A baby will make love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, bank balance smaller, home happier, clothes dirty, the past forgotten, and the future worth living for...

"G" Boys- West Lafayette Family & Children Portraits

I had so much fun this afternoon working with these little guys...I tell you what, something about not having held a little tiny baby for a long time, and then holding a newborn Saturday, and a 3 month old today, makes me realize how out of practice I am! Thank goodness Mom & Dad were here to help today, because let's face it, they are still so bendy/ floppy at 3 months, but really, I don't think these boys could have gotten any cuter. Baby C fell asleep just being all nuzzled up next to his Momma, and I swear, what a sweet sweet moment to see. I forgot how sweet and innocent they are in the very beginning, it seems like lifetimes ago when my Coltyn was that small and quiet =) I had a wonderful time working with these kiddos, and can't wait to see them back in the future, thanks you guys for this opportunity. Rissa's Senior Prom 2010: South Newton Prom 2010, Kentland, Indiana

I cannot believe enough time has even passed for my youngest sister to have had her Senior Prom come & go...I'm not ready for her to graduate yet, how is it even possible that she could be old enough for all this? =) I'm glad I was able to see her all prettied up, she looked absolutely amazing, and her flowers, well, they were rockin thanks to the girls @ Rubia Flowers in West Lafayette. =) Glad we got at least a few pictures in before the rain literally just started dumping down on us!! The girls stayed dry which was the most important thing...=)

Kyle David Miller Foundation Britax Marathon Car Seat Giveaway!!

I became a fan of the Kyle David Miller Foundation earlier this year, and follow their blog closely I feel like it's an important cause, because after watching their video, who would not feel compelled to spread this message? I know way too many people who like myself, would not otherwise know that these children are not safe in their booster seats. Finding Inspiration

One popular question I'm asked is, where do I find my inspiration for my photos. The truth is about 50/50... half of them I think up and concoct in my own busy mind, the other half of the truth is I've seen them somewhere else, and thought to myself, one day... I'll use that pose. And then I found this article, that I found very insightful from another blog I follow... I was asked to write an article on this topic by a friend on one of my favorite photography message boards awhile back. Today is the day that it was posted, and I thought my blog readers might like to read it too. :-)

1. Read magazines, books, and newspapers with lots of photos in them.
Look at the photos and critique them - list the things that you love about the image and also list the things that you thing would have been better if done differently. As you do this with several different images, you may start to notice some things that the images have in common that you either like or don't like. Use the newly discovered knowledge to help guide you to some new and different ideas for your work.

2. Join a local photography club and participate in their activities.
Many cities have a local photography club. Most clubs meet at least once per month or more frequently. The group in my area meets weekly, and each week they do something different. For instance, one week of the month they will do a meet and critique (the first time I went to one of these, I was simply amazed at the talent of the other photogs.) Then, the next week they will do a photo walk at a fun location in the area (they did a really cool one at the greenhouse at the university awhile back.) They do other field trips, organize photography exhibits for all of the members to participate in, etc.

If you don't have a group in your area, try starting one. Even if there are only 3-4 members, you can still have a great time learning from one another and finding inspiration.

You can also take a photography class or attend a workshop to get similar inspiration like you would from a photography club. The whole purpose is simply to find people with a similar interest and learn and participate with them.

3. Take yourself for a photo-drive.

This one has to be one of my favorites. There are two rules that I have found that make these more successful: 1. Do not take any kids or husbands or anyone. Just you. 2. Don't stress about exposure or figuring out manual mode. Put it on Aperture Priority mode and use the exposure compensation. Or, if you are still learning about the modes on your camera, just use Auto mode or your camera's scene modes.

The whole purpose of this exercise is simply to go and have fun and enjoy seeing beauty and things of interest everywhere around you. I love to get myself a smoothie (or other treat), find some great music to fit my mood, and drive to different locations. When I find a good location, I try not to be rushed (unless I am somewhere that I really shouldn't be, etc. - not that I am advocating that type of behavior! LOL) Anyway, I will take a bunch of photos - like really a lot of all of the different objects and textures and patterns that I find. I try to photograph things from a variety of angles and perspectives.

When I am out on one of these drives, I try to look for interesting old buildings, alleyways, etc. I always listen to my gut if I don't feel comfortable there, though. I also love to drive into the country and take pictures there. It will be different for you wherever you live, but I hope that you will have fun exploring and discovering new things and places. And
you'll probably come home feeling much more inspired and refreshed.

4. Take pictures of something that is a different subject matter for you.

This is something that I used to encourage the students in my beginning photography class to do. If you're a portrait photographer, try doing a few landscapes and close-ups of other subjects. If you primarily shoot landscapes, try photographing people. Breaking out of the subject matter that you're most accustomed to will help you see what you normally photograph in a different way.

5. Photograph a series all based on one theme.
I love this one, too. Choose a theme that you'd like to photograph - it can be a color, a specific type of object, or something even more specific (like the Danbo images below). Whatever theme you choose, be sure to do all that you can to find variety and be creative with it.

Here, I did a search for the word "blue" on Flickr, and this is a screen shot of what it came back with. Obviously, each of these images was taken by a different photographer, but it is a great source of ideas and inspiration for a color theme.

And, for the last screen shot I will share I searched for "danbo." I don't know why I find this little guy so inspiring, but I think he is. Or, I should say, the photos of him are.

6. Read blogs of other amazing photographers.

Also, I love to surf around at stock photo websites. I use lots of stock photos in the QuickPro DVDs, and I can easily lose hours of time surfing through the images there. You can register for free at most of them, and create a "lightbox" that you can add your favorite photos to. It's a great thing to revisit every so often when you need some inspiration.

7. Participate in a Photography Assignment or Challenge.
There are tons of these all over the internet. Here are a few links to different ones that I found:

8. Tell a Story.

This is the goal of any photographer - we all want to tell a story about our subject. But, this tip goes a little beyond that. When you're out taking pictures, try to keep this really in the front of your mind. Tell the story. That means taking pictures from all different angles, perspectives, etc. Get close up shots, and take shots from a distance. Photograph each of the individual elements that tell the story - for instance, this photo of a toddler's toy immediately tells you the toy's story - it broken. The angle and perspective work well to emphasize what I was trying to say with the image.

9. Make a Photo Notebook or Idea Wall.
This is one that many of us have seen or heard before. When you are working on Tip #1, clip the photos that you like and put them in a binder or notebook. I have seen offices of graphic and interior designers that have a wall just for this purpose as well. If you use a binder or notebook, be sure to record on the page your thoughts about the image - particularly the specific things that you liked about it. As the notebook or wall becomes more and more populated with images, you'll have a great resource to refer to for inspiration.

Be sure to periodically go through and remove any images that don't appeal to you or your style anymore, and replace them with images that better fit your current interests.

Something that always crosses my mind when people suggest this tip to me is that photography magazines cost lots of money. Several of them are almost $10 per issue, and that's a lot of money to spend to simply cut it up. So, here is my suggestion to you - go to the thrift store or used book store. Many of them will carry old magazines for very affordable prices. Also, many libraries simply give away past issues of magazines, so try checking there, too. One last thing that you can do to keep this project affordable is to use non-photography related magazines. Many of these are only $1 - $3 per issue, and they are also filled with amazing photos.

10. Look for beauty in the ordinary objects around you.
About a week or so ago, there was a thread posted here where someone had photographed a weed. It was a beautiful image, and I think that it really applies to this tip. There is beauty in everything around us - even ordinary things, and even things that we normally view as unattractive. Try to look around and see everything a little differently. Try to photograph it in a different way. Experiment with different distances, perspectives, and
angles.

What To Wear 2010

I think the most popular question I'm asked after booking a portrait session is, "What should we wear?" Many families, couples, etc. will go with the classic typical look of jeans, khakis & white shirts...What makes my job interesting is when people are able to match their favorite looks, personality, in with some bold colors that really pop right out of the image.

When choosing outfits, they do not have to be identical, what I try to stress is complimentary. Mom wears something that compliments the little girls dress that compliments the little boy's tie that compliments Dad's button up....Where they all coordinate and work together. I have been praying to the good Lord for guidance on which path I am truly meant to travel down in my life. I feel as though I am finally clear minded enough to see the path he wants me to go down for now, whose to say later in life it wont wind and throw some curves in there..but this is where I am for now. My business took off faster than I imagined it would. I thought I'd try my hand at something new, and it's working, and quite successfully at that! There are several great things happening with Moments In Time currently, and I'm doing my best to keep up with all aspects of this business, as hard as it may be. We had a wedding I shot in Indy in late February, and as always it was such a pleasure, the weddings are chaotic, nerve racking, exciting, and rewarding. My favorite Moment is seeing the Groom's face as his bride first enters the wedding venue....it's always so priceless, and gives me goose bumps.

Early March I decided an appropriate fundraiser for our business would be to offer Easter themed pictured with a FREE mini session, that generally retails for between $30 & $40, my goal is to get people to come out, get some great Easter shots of their little ones, and purchase prints with a goal of raising 10% of all of our sales will be donated to the American Red Cross for Haiti rescues. I hope that we are successful, and I plan on offering an annual special like this, where a percentage of sales goes to a charity of choice that year. It's a nice way to get the community involved in remembering how important our time here really is, and valuing what we have, and remembering to give back to those who are less fortunate than we are. It's easy to get caught up in the day to day living, and forget that every day there are children starving, and disasters happening such as what has been going on in Haiti. I think if we as a whole, can remember that tragedies are happening on a daily basis in this world, it will help us remain well rounded people, and keeping our eyes on the ultimate prize of what we're here for, helping others, and making a difference. That's my take on life anyways.

We aren't even half way through with March; and it's been a very busy month for Moments In Time. We have applied with some charitable organizations to help provide my love of photography, to those in need. It's my way of giving back, in a way that I know how to. So far, we have applied to become affiliated with the following organization's, and I look forward to applying to many more in the near future. This is my chance at making a BIG difference in these people's lives, and I intend on doing everything I possibly can to make that happen.

One of my new year's resolutions for my business is better marketing, and part of that is of course the selective sales. I've been putting off ordering all the canvas', wrap's, large prints, for whatever reason... BUT starting the first of this year, I put my foot down, and bit the bullet! Today I will be busy officially working on specific overhauling on my blogger sites, but first I will be attempting all new things on a "Tester Blog". It shall prove to be exciting and frustrating all in one, because I am not a huge fan of HTML code, but I do have to like it to avoid paying someone else to do these things for me. I have a few new blogger header's to try out, but first I need to customize and tweak them a bit more.

Last night I ordered some fun things for Valentine's day & hope to have at least one parent take advantage of the great price and fun props I have available for Valentine's Day. Why Does Custom Photography Cost More?

The digital revolution has brought amazing flexibility and ability to control various factors during the image taking and making process. Photographers, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur all benefit from this ability to manipulate pixels. However, with flexibility comes a price. Digital camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its’ lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into creating a work of photographic art.

We all know that you can go to the local Walgreen’s and pay a $1.99 for a print - as a client you may wonder why you may pay upwards of $50, $70, $90 for a custom photography print. Photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:

“How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at x store?”

The truth of the matter is the answer to this question is multifaceted. Much of the cost of a photographic print produced by a professional photographer has a lot to do with the time, equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer not to mention expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

The cost of TIME

Approaching it from a time standpoint, let’s imagine that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love. This photographer is traveling an hour to your destination to photograph your session. Here is an example of a time break down:

* session prep time (30 mins - 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)
* one hour travel time TO session
* 15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home
* 90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject
* one hour travel time FROM session
* 30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer
* 30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images
* 2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images
* 1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering
* 2-3 hours time with client for ordering images
* 1 hour sorting through and checking order
* 30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery
* 30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped
* any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues

In this example, the time spent per client can range from just under 13 hours to 19 hours - dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to ONE session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot (aka SESSION FEE) you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session.The COSTS of Maintaining a Custom Photography Business:

Regarding equipment costs, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good optical quality lenses and digital storage mediums and computer set up can run from $10,000-$30,000 costs dependent on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2100 there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run from $900 to $2500. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer.

Then come lab costs for specialty products. A good photographer knows the lab is integral to their success. Photography labs dedicated to the professional photographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allows the custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you, the discerning client.

Discussion other costs of running a photography business could take awhile so we’ll skip many of the intricate details. There is of course much more: including costs of running the business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

APPLES to ORANGES to BANANAS:

Often times clients will mention to their photographer that X studio in the mall/department store only charges $19.99 for an 8×10 “sheet” or they may mention other things related to discount photography chains. The fact is those discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service. In February 2007 leased photography retail space by a rather well known discount department store that started in Arkansas closed down 500 of their portrait studios across the nation? The reason is simple, you cannot make money on 99¢ “professional” prints if you do not sell enough of them. Interestingly enough - those same studios that offer the loss leader packages often charge much much more for their a la carte pricing (as high as $40-50 for an 8×10). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portrait services in the first place was to get you, the savvy consumer, in through their door so that you could spend more money with them in other departments. Your “PORTRAITS” are considered the “loss leader”.

Going to a chain studio, as a consumer, you don’t have the benefit of 1:1 attention for 2 hours at your home where your child is allowed to explore, play and be comfortable in their home environment, nor do you get the experience that many custom photographers are known for or the lovely captures of natural expressions. You simply get a bare bones, “SAY CHEESE” experience. Keep this in mind when selecting a photographer.

REPUTATION/EXPERTISE of the PHOTOGRAPHER:

Being in demand, being well known for quality work, having a good reputation often costs time on the photographer’s part. Their expertise comes at a cost, their time learning their craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment put forth on their end to create a persona about their business that oozes professionalism. A great number of photographers go a very long time from the time that they purchase their first good camera to making money at the business of photography. Many photographers, when first starting out, rush in thinking that the business will be easily profitable in no time, how expensive could it be to get a camera and use it to create their dream? They often neglect to factor in the cost of business, the cost of equipment, software, back ups, etc..

Being of sound reputation, a better professional photographer knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. To create good work good equipment, reliable equipment, back up equipment is a necessity. The photographer who desires to be known as better/best/unparalelled reputation-wise knows that the most important thing they can do for their business is reliability and dependability. This is how reputations get built. Good work often is a wonderful side product of building that good reputation.

I hope this (lengthy) article helps shed some light on WHY a custom photographer is a better choice for your family’s memories. The photographs that are produced as a result of the professionalism and dedication that your photographer has will be cherished for a lifetime (or more) and great thought and consideration should be placed into hiring who is right for your family’s most precious investment.

Beautiful baby H was over for a mini session today and Coltyn just adores here up & down. We haven't quite mastered the whole be gentle she's just a little girl thing with Coltyn yet, but we are working on it! Most importantly, baby H is a tough little girl who gives Coltyn grief right back, it's adorable watching the two of them play together =) Thanks for this opportunity to get some adorable shots of her tonight, smiling or not, she's absolutely beautiful! -M-

I had such a blast with such a fun loving family yesterday. The kids are growing up so fast (I suppose that's just what kids do...) but it is still unfair! A photographer friend lost her son early yesterday morning. It is with a heavy heart and tired eyes that I greet you this morning and urge you that if you can help contribute, any amount would be greatly appreciated to help with his funeral expenses. Thank you guys for being so patient with me! This last month has been rough up with the constant upgrades, to the new learning curve on a Mac, etc. etc. You guys are awesome and you truly were a wonderful family to photograph. FINALLY! I am finally able to process & edit two photo sessions that were waiting first on me to figure out what was wrong w/ my laptop, why it crashed, then through the purchase of my new iMac... then waiting on the return & refund of the editing software I use for windows, and to get the editing software in the Mac version... then getting it all loaded, and all the add on's re downloaded & added back into the software... GEESH THESE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL & PATIENT. Just so you all know, I'm back to the processing & editing process, I'm very HAPPY that I'm able to finally finish out these session's as I was starting to feel really bad.

Office Remodel

Is coming along quite nicely...we now have the filing cabinets in there, and are preparing this weekend to put the countertop in there, as well as finish the painting and hang the TV on the wall :) My new office chair came also and let me just tell you...it's a dream!

We are in the middle of painting around all the stuff that is waiting to be moved into their new homes (AKA the filing cabinets) but the cabinets wont be here until Wednesday at the earliest....I have such a wonderful amazing husband that knows how important a easily flowing workspace means to me. He came home from working OT last night and painted some more, there's only so many walls you can paint on while the other walls are wet, and you cant keep just moving stuff around when the other walls are wet...We got the countertops on Saturday, and they are beautiful. I've been taking progression pictures....I'll post them whenever its all done. I'm so excited & just wanted to let you all know what's going on why I may not post as often because of the workspace being limited (I'm working off of a card table haha!)

Vacation 2009

We had a blast on our vacation, and we are back home. Looking forward to a busy month with Moments In Time. I had the opportunity to hang out with a fellow photographer buddy and learn several new things from her/ with her. It was a blast. Our families went out to dinner, then we went out to my Grandparents farm and took some pictures following with going back to my house in order to compare & have a blast learning things together as we are both newly opening our businesses. I am still waiting for my software to arrive, it's taking so long it seems like. I will be glad to have new & exciting things for my clients to look at through the next three weeks. We will be on vacation next week, I will try to pop in here & there, have a good week everyone!

I've been waiting for some software to come in now for a few days...waiting on this to be able to post more pictures on here of more recent sessions...

I also am very excited about my purchase of my first speedlite flash...it will make a great addition to my Tracy Joy Kristine Camera bag...Oh how I love the brown & teal color scheme together.

I'm also quite excited for tomorrow to roll around, a photographer friend & I are getting together to have some photographer's fun tomorrow afternoon ... I love talking pictures!! She is also going to take some family photos of us, granted it does not rain while we are trying to do so...I'm very excited! We haven't had a family photo taken since November...ridiculous!

I also have ordered my first floating canvas for display in my office, which I cannot wait to see & be able to show off to you guys!!

We will be on vacation next week, we are going to get away for a few days before Nursing School picks back up full swing ...

I'm a little behind on getting my post's caught up & on some editing, life just keeps on happening, and I'm running a lot, but love the days when I get to sit down & get caught up on here. Christina & Perry are getting married next weekend, and I can't wait to see them! She will be such a beautiful bride! We are actually going to two weddings next weekend, my cousins as well as one of my lifelong friends whom I grew up with, Ricky Hughes. I'm really excited to see both brides, they always look so beautiful on one of the biggest days of their lives, it's awesome! I won't doddle as I've still got more processing to do for these photos, I hope to get completely updated on this today =) Thanks for looking!

Mother's Day 2009

My boys were fortunate to be able to spend some of our wonderful day with my Mom...Coltyn is the highlight of my parent's days, and words cannot explain how neat it is to see such joy in my parent's eyes. Here are a few from our special day with them.

The business is coming along nicely, I'm happy with the way it's going, and all the thing's I'm learning as I go along. Photoshop CS4 is more amazing than anyone could have ever told me. I've learned so much from the web sites I belong to, as well as the tutorials I've been reading up on. I've been blessed by God to have such wonderful people helping me along the way, pointing me in right directions, and better directions, with good idea's that mesh well with my already existing ideas about the business.

I had the pleasure of capturing some priceless photos with an adorable set of girls in the park a few weeks ago. The girls are so hilarious, and have such adorable personalities, the many faces of Reagan as her Mom put it, which is SO so true! I've posted a few for everyone to enjoy...I've been keeping unbelievably busy with classes, and the startup of our business, it's been awesome!! I'm testing out Photoshop Lightroom, CS4 & Elements to see which I prefer to edit with...it's all about learning..it's a slow but very enjoyable process! <3>

Getting things going...

It's a little slower getting started than I imagined...Life keep's happening, can you imagine that? I'm working with the web site contractor's currently, and we are working to get our first web site up and running, until then however this will have to work! I'm so excited to officially have a name after more than a month of debating over it...here we are, Moments In Time, I love it...I hope to capture just that with each and every one of my clients. I'm loving the entire aspect of this business, it's such a wonderful and enjoyable hobby...I don't even really consider it a "job" as much as I do a hobby. I better get back to work getting my logo figured out...watch the blog for more to come!! Enjoy
